For the benefit of time I’m going to make this short and sweet for our loyal readers. First of all I know what you’re thinking – “Hurricane has chili? I thought it just served subpar wings and fish. I don’t understand their menu.” Well as a matter of fact they do have chili, and you don’t need to worry about ordering it. This was immediately clear once the waitress brought the chili out from the kitchen. During this time there was one other patron in the restaurant when we rolled in at happy hour. Once the bartender turned her back after placing the bowls in front of us this older gentleman, who was on his 2nd Crown on the rocks since we’d been there, leaned over and said “You guys didn’t order the chili did you?” Yes sir, unfortunately we did. He proceeded to explain to us how he had sent the chili back on three separate occasions in this very establishment.
Now we don’t let others’ opinions sway our vote so I will tell how my bowl was. First of all, the menu tells us that it is a hearty beef and red bean chili, which… tends to led to a pretty ordinary bowl of chili, but we keep our minds (and mouths) open. I think what came out was along the lines of somebody who tried to experiment with the recipe and it didn’t go very well. I appreciate trying for a unique chili- I really do- because most restaurants don’t. I also believe a place like Hurricane shouldn’t serve the same kind of chili that you’d get at a diner. However I honestly couldn’t tell what the meat was. The bartender answered our inquiry with, “I think it’s steak.” Whatever it was, it was chewy and rough and stood out in a negative way. I would like to compare it to the steak in a can of Campbell’s soup. I mean when you need a can opener you know what you are getting into; when you order chili it should almost melt in your mouth. The meat is a vital piece in the recipe! Sure in this dish there were few veggies thrown in but they didn’t really add value. I do think there is potential here, because a place like Hurricane is able to make a statement with their chili. It could go the sweet route or the spicy route and be a staple side on the menu. But if they’re just putting it on the menu to have it on the menu, let me give them some advice: Don’t.
